The FLEXIDOME 3100i IR is a sophisticated security camera, designed for professional IP-video installations.
Take note of this. It is a wired Ethernet camera, not a Wi-Fi camera, and it is normally powered through PoE.
While this camera is very good, I’ve realised users don’t get the best out of it. Many users complained about its installation, so I decided to answer some common questions.
Bosch FLEXIDOME 3100i IR Network security camera is designed for outdoor use, and it’s available in NDE-3702-AL ( 2MP model) and NDE-3703-AL (5MP model).
Both versions share almost the same specs and are similar in function.
They share a 3.3-10.2 mm motorised varifocal lens, integrated infrared illumination, PoE, local microSD recording, and Bosch’s IVA Pro Buildings analytics.
They are rated IP66 for protection against dust and water and IK10 for impact resistance.
These are security cameras built for reliability, better image processing, and analytics.
The 5MP NDE-3703-AL supports up to 30 frames per second, integrated IR illumination up to 30 meters, microSD storage up to 2 TB, and ONVIF profiles G, M, S, and T.
Does it produce quality footage?
Yes, the NDE-3703-AL 5MP model produces 2592 × 1944 video quality, while the NDE-3702-AL 2MP produces 1920 × 1080.
Also, the lens range allows you or your installer to adjust the viewing angle of the camera rather than being locked into one fixed field of view.
Bosch’s FLEXIDOME 3100i IR camera 2MP and 5MP models are better than those cheap 8MP and 12MP consumer cameras.
It is built around image processing, dynamic range, lens quality, analytics, and controlled video streams rather than using resolution as its only selling point.
Is the 3100i IR really suitable for outdoor use?
Yes, the outdoor FLEXIDOME 3100i IR models are suitable for outdoors.
The NDE-3702-AL and NDE-3703-AL have IP66 protection and IK10 impact resistance.
IP66 helps protect against dust and water, while IK10 is the higher end of the common impact-resistance scale used for vandal-resistant equipment.
These models are not just suitable for outdoor use, they’re a good fit for commercial use.
Suitable for entrances, parking areas, building perimeters, schools, offices, loading zones, and similar environments.
While they have IP66 protection, it does not mean the cable entry, mounting hardware, drainage, or condensation should not be addressed properly during installation.
Can you use the camera without a Bosch recorder?
Yes. The NDE-3703-AL supports ONVIF profiles G, M, S, and T, which allows it to work with compatible third-party surveillance and recording systems.
The camera can also perform edge recording using a microSD card.
That does not mean every feature will automatically work identically in every third-party VMS, however, basic video streaming and recording may work well through ONVIF.
Advanced Bosch-specific analytics and certain configuration features require compatible Bosch software or a VMS with explicit support for those capabilities.
This is a common issue with most professional IP cameras. While it supports ONVIF, not all features work perfectly with every recorder.
Can it record directly to a microSD card?
Absolutely Yes. It has a microSD card slot and supports cards up to 2 TB.
It allows it to provide local or edge recording rather than depending entirely on a central recorder.
This helps in reducing dependence on the NVR or offering another recording option.
It can also be useful for installations where network connectivity to a central recording server is not always available.
However, microSD should not automatically be treated as a complete replacement for a properly designed recording system.
For important security installations, centralised recording can provide better retention management, redundancy, investigation tools, and administrative control.
Does it support H.265?
Yes. The 3100i models support H.265 as well as H.264 and MJPEG, allowing the installer to balance image quality, bandwidth, and storage requirements.
This becomes particularly important when you’re using several security cameras.
If your security camera produces high-quality video but consumes excessive network bandwidth or storage, it creates problems elsewhere in the surveillance system.
The 3100i’s compression and intelligent-streaming capabilities are therefore very important.
Is the 3100i secure from a cybersecurity standpoint?
This is a very important question, but for a professional security camera like Bosch FLEXIDOME 3100i IR, cybersecurity is one of its strongest selling points.
This model includes a Secure Element with Trusted Platform Module functionality designed to protect certificates and cryptographic keys used for authentication and encryption.
The product family also carries cybersecurity certifications including UL 2900-2-3 Level 2 and IEC 62443-4-1.
A network camera is effectively a computer attached to the network. If its credentials, firmware, or communication channels are poorly protected, the camera can become a security risk.
Bosch has built security into the hardware and firmware architecture, so security is not a mere software feature.
Is the camera good for the price?
Honestly, it depends on your needs. It can cost about $500 depending on the variant you choose: micro or standard, indoor or outdoor, 2MP or 5MP model.
If it’s home use, and you only want to see whether someone invaded your privacy, there are cheaper cameras that are just good for this purpose.
On the other hand, if you need a powerful security camera for outdoor use or/and/or commercial use, FLEXIDOME 3100i IR cameras are good options.
You are definitely going to need professional networking, PoE, ONVIF integration, strong physical protection, local storage, advanced analytics, cybersecurity features, a motorised varifocal lens, and long-term deployment in this regard.
That is where the price difference matters and is justified.
